Viola, treize ans, vient de recevoir par la poste un carnet de sa mère portée disparue dans le Grand Nord québécois deux ans plus tôt. Elle décide de retrouver sa trace. Dans le train qui l'amène vers le Labrador, elle rencontre Nashtash, une fille innue de son âge, déjà mère d'un petit bébé. Elles se lient d'amitié et la jeune Indienne invite Viola à venir chez sa grand-mère, dans la réserve. Là, elle prend conscience de la dure vie des Innus, que la grand-mère considère pourtant comme riches "avec des milliers de caribous qui passent et repassent dans les collines, les truites mouchetées dans les lacs, les lièvres, les petits fruits, toute cette eau" (cf. p. 79). Mais Viola y voit surtout de la souffrance: drogue, alcoolisme, révolte contre les Blancs qui rasent les forêts, détruisent les habitats des caribous et construisent des barrages. Lorsqu'elle repart dans la grande ville, la petite fille rebelle qu'elle était a grandi, elle a fait la paix avec sa mère et avec elle-même. |
